Phonics Check.Open app

Terms

Last updated: 7 May 2026

These terms are a plain-English description of the agreement between you and PhonicsCheck.co.uk when you use our practice app. We’ve tried to keep them short and readable. If anything is unclear, email support@phonicscheck.co.uk and we’ll explain.

How we handle your personal data is covered separately in our Privacy Policy. By buying a season pass you confirm you are 18 or over and have the authority to enter this agreement on behalf of your household.

What we offer

PhonicsCheck.co.uk is a web app that helps you prepare your Year 1 child for the Phonics Screening Check. A season pass gives you unlimited access to all daily practice sessions, all available mock checks, and the targeted-practice drills. The 2025/26 season pass is valid through 31 August 2026.

What it costs

The season pass is £6.99 one-off. There is no subscription. Nothing renews. We will never charge your card again unless you actively buy something else from us. The price is the full price you pay — we are not currently VAT-registered, so no VAT is chargeable on top.

Cancellation and refunds

UK consumer law gives you a 14-day cooling-off period for online purchases of digital content. Our 30-day money-back guarantee covers more than that — if you change your mind for any reason, email support@phonicscheck.co.uk within 30 days of your purchase and we’ll refund you in full. No questions, no forms, no “tell us why” survey.

After the 30-day window we don’t offer routine refunds, but if the service stops working as described you have statutory rights as a consumer that we’ll always honour — email us and we’ll put it right.

Acceptable use

A pass is for one parent and one child. Please don’t share sign-in links, scrape the corpus, automate access, or resell the service. If you want a school or class licence, email us — we’re happy to talk.

What’s ours

The PhonicsCheck.co.uk name, logo, design, and the practice corpus (the curated word lists, pseudo-words, and alien characters) are ours. The past-paper materials shown in mock checks are Crown copyright, used under the Open Government Licence. Buying a season pass gives you the right to use the app for your own family for the season; it doesn’t transfer ownership of any of this.

What we don’t promise

We’ll always try to keep the app fast and available, and to fix bugs quickly. We can’t guarantee uninterrupted service or that the app will be free of every defect. The service is provided “as is”, within the limits of UK consumer law.

We’re also not affiliated with the Department for Education, and we don’t represent the official Phonics Screening Check. Past-paper materials are reproduced under Crown copyright (Open Government Licence). Practising with us doesn’t guarantee any particular result on the actual check.

If we discontinue the service

If we have to take the app down before 31 August 2026, we’ll email you and refund the unused portion of your season pass on a pro-rata basis. We’ll give as much notice as we can.

Liability

Our liability to you for anything that goes wrong with the service is capped at the price you paid us. Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law — in particular, your right to a refund or repair if the service is not as described.

Changes to these terms

If we make a material change, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and email you. Smaller wording fixes won’t trigger an email.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute that we can’t resolve by talking goes to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
